Ghanaian rapper turned evangelist, Armstrong Affum, popularly known as Opanka, has recently revealed some startling details about his early years in the music industry under his first management. Opanka shared the challenges he faced despite his hard work and musical success.
Despite producing hit songs and freestyles like “Obiaa Ne Ni Taste,” Opanka shockingly disclosed that he never saw a penny for his efforts during this period. The rapper revealed that his focus was primarily on growth and building his brand, which led him to overlook the financial aspects of his career. He was so dedicated to his craft that he never even questioned why he wasn’t earning any money.
“If I tell you that I didn’t make a dime for any of my hard work, will you believe me? That’s what happened,” he said during the interview. According to Opanka, he never received any payment for his performances. His management promised that any income generated would go towards building a recording studio for him, but even his music videos were never funded.
The realization of the mismanagement came when Opanka hosted a birthday party and a DJ complained about not being paid for his services. This sparked Opanka’s curiosity and frustration, prompting him to question his management about the situation. Unfortunately, his attempts to get answers only led to further frustration and confusion.
At one point, Opanka even admitted that whenever he composed a new song, he secretly wished it would flop. The reason? He wasn’t making anything from his work, and the constant mismanagement had left him feeling disillusioned.
When asked why he agreed to such an arrangement in the first place, Opanka explained that he didn’t want to be seen as an artist who abandons their team after gaining success. His decision was driven by a desire to maintain loyalty and avoid being labeled as ungrateful.
Opanka’s story sheds light on the often unseen struggles many artists face in the industry, especially in the early stages of their careers. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of financial transparency and fair management in the entertainment business.
