Lawyers representing Mona Faiz Montrage, the incarcerated Ghanaian influencer, and socialite, have officially requested the return of her passport from the U.S. government to facilitate her self-deportation to Ghana.
In a document submitted to Judge J. Paul Oetken, the legal team appealed for the release of Ms. Montrage’s passport, which was surrendered to Pretrial Services following her arrest. The request, made with the government’s consent, aims to initiate her deportation process once her incarceration ends.
“We represent Ms. Mona Montrage on the above-captioned matter. We write with the government’s consent to respectfully request the release of Ms. Montrage’s passport, which was surrendered to Pretrial Services at the time of her arrest,” the letter reads in part.
This appeal aligns with a previous judgment stating that her passport should be returned upon completing her sentence. Plans have been made for Ms. Montrage to be escorted by the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) from the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) facility directly to the airport, ensuring no domestic stops before her flight to Ghana.
Ms. Montrage voluntarily surrendered on July 29, 2024, and is serving a one-year-and-a-day sentence at FDC Philadelphia. Her conviction stems from a six-count indictment accusing her of involvement in romance scams and laundering the proceeds of those schemes.
As her legal team works to ensure a smooth self-deportation process, the case remains a significant point of discussion both in Ghana and internationally.
