Ghanaian highlife sensation Krymi, born Henry Nuamah, has voiced his frustrations about the presence of so-called gatekeepers in the music industry. The artist behind the hit song ‘Dede’ shared his thoughts on the impact of gatekeeping and its influence on musicians.

I don’t like people who are called ‘gatekeepers.’ I don’t like them because the industry doesn’t belong to them; it belongs to the musicians,” Krymi stated. “Do not gatekeep a talent or a gift you didn’t give. The only person who can gatekeep is God. And so I don’t like those people.

Despite his criticism, Krymi acknowledged that gatekeeping is an unfortunate reality within the industry. He advised musicians to adopt a strategic approach to navigate the system effectively. According to him, success in the music industry extends beyond raw talent. It requires a comprehensive understanding of the business side of music, strong branding, a dedicated team, and consistently delivering high-quality music.

“But unfortunately, there’s a system, and these people are there. Hence, you need to find a way and play along with the system,” Krymi explained. “Whether you succeed or not depends on putting your things together—your team understanding the business aspects of music, branding yourself well, and doing good music.”

The soulful artist, known for his powerful and emotive vocals, is promoting his latest single, ‘Aso Wodem,’ as he solidifies his place in the highlife music scene.

Krymi’s insights serve as a call to action for both musicians and industry stakeholders to work towards a more inclusive and supportive music environment.
