Global Citizen has officially announced that John Legend will headline the 2025 Move Afrika Tour, marking a major milestone for the initiative aimed at empowering Africa’s youth and boosting the continent’s creative economy.
The tour, set to take place in February 2025, will make stops in Kigali, Rwanda and Lagos, Nigeria. Move Afrika: Kigali is scheduled for February 21 at BK Arena, while Move Afrika: Lagos will happen at The Palms on February 25.
Move Afrika is a groundbreaking pan-African touring circuit created by Global Citizen in partnership with Kendrick Lamar’s entertainment company, pgLang. Launched to generate economic opportunities for Africa’s young population through live music and creative industries, the initiative has already seen success. Kendrick Lamar himself headlined a memorable performance in Kigali in 2023.
Expressing his excitement, John Legend shared:
“I’m honored and excited to perform in Kigali and Lagos as part of the Move Afrika tour — an initiative that not only brings unforgettable shows, but also creates entrepreneurship and job opportunities, empowering young people to engage with Africa’s growing music and creative industries. Africa has always been a global cultural powerhouse, and it’s an honor to be part of the future of live music on the continent.”
Hugh Evans, Co-Founder and CEO of Global Citizen, emphasized the vision behind Move Afrika:
“As Move Afrika grows year over year, our goal is to equip and inspire Africa’s dynamic, young population to participate in the live music and creative industries, while investing in its future with lasting infrastructure that will mean the continent no longer needs to be excluded from the international touring circuit.”
John Legend will headline Move Afrika following an eventful 2024. Earlier this year, he performed a Prince tribute alongside Sheila E. at the Democratic National Convention and showed his support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s White House campaign.
In August, the singer explored new territory with the release of his first children’s album, My Favorite Dream, produced by Sufjan Stevens and featuring his wife Chrissy Teigen and their two children, Luna and Miles.
Legend also celebrated the 20th anniversary of his groundbreaking debut album Get Lifted with a special reissue, which added 11 bonus tracks, including a remix of “Let’s Get Lifted Again” featuring Lil Wayne and Killer Mike.
The Move Afrika Tour 2025 promises to be a game-changer for Africa’s live music landscape. With John Legend as the headliner, it continues the mission of spotlighting Africa as a global creative powerhouse while paving the way for economic growth and youth empowerment.
Mark your calendars for this unforgettable experience in Kigali and Lagos as Africa takes center stage.
