Ghanaian dancehall and reggae superstar Stonebwoy has sparked an important industry conversation, calling for a shift in focus from chasing record label deals to building partnerships with the right investors.

In an interview on Asempa FM, the “Overlord” hitmaker explained that while record labels do play a role in the growth of artistes, they are not always the financial or strategic partners artistes need.

Record labels are not necessarily investors,” he stated. “They come with different agreements, expectations, and objectives. What artistes need are people who truly understand the business and are willing to commit real capital and support.

Stonebwoy elaborated on the business dynamics behind music success, citing the example of Nigerian artistes who have successfully penetrated the global market. According to him, their growth has been largely supported by independent investors who believe in their vision and are ready to fund their craft.

He stressed that sustainable success in the music industry requires access to capital, something many artistes lack. The solution, he believes, lies in strategic partnerships with investors who bring not only money but business insight and long-term commitment.

There is a huge need for capital in this business, and it doesn’t always come from record labels. We need investors who understand our vision and are willing to support it,” he added.

Stonebwoy’s comments have reignited discussions about the financial structure of Ghana’s music industry. Many emerging artistes rely on self-funding or hope for a record deal, often without realizing the complexities involved. His remarks highlight the need for a new approach—one that views music as a business requiring serious investment and strategic guidance.
