The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 33-year-old woman, Latifa Salifu, in connection with the alleged theft of a four-day-old baby boy from the postnatal ward of Mamprobi Hospital in Accra.

According to police, the incident occurred on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, prompting swift action by the Dansoman Police Command following a formal complaint.

At a press briefing held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, disclosed that the case was reported at approximately 10:00 a.m. on February 17.

Abigail Dzikunu, accompanied by Henrita Abe Blessed, informed police that an unidentified woman—allegedly disguised as a nurse—had taken a newborn baby from the hospital’s postnatal ward.

The baby’s mother, Precious Ankomah, who delivered her son on February 14, told investigators that a woman dressed in a peach-colored nurse’s uniform approached her under the pretext of administering medication to the baby. The woman subsequently left with the child and did not return.

Following the report, officers immediately visited the hospital to gather preliminary information and obtain witness statements. A manhunt was subsequently launched.

At approximately 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday, February 18, police arrested Latifa Salifu, a cloth seller based in Accra, at the premises of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. She was found in possession of a baby suspected to be the missing child.

During initial questioning, the suspect reportedly claimed she had given birth at the hospital and had been discharged due to inadequate care. However, preliminary investigations found no hospital records to substantiate her claim.

Latifa Salifu remains in police custody as investigations continue. Meanwhile, arrangements are being made to place the baby under hospital care for medical evaluation, safekeeping, and further verification procedures.
Authorities have commended the public for their cooperation and reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, particularly vulnerable individuals such as newborns.
